Annie Hall is a 1977 comedy romance movie directed by and starring Woody Allen, with Diane Keaton cast as the other half of the love interest. It was one of Allen’s most popular films and remains so to date.
Allen stars as Alvy Singer, a comedian with a relationship with a girl named Annie (Keaton). The movie chronicles their relationship, and they step into one another’s pasts. Despite this bond, however, they have problems and break up. Annie moves in with someone else.
But Singer realizes he loves her and tries to get her back. This attempt fails, and, dejected, Singer writes a play about the whole affair in which he actually wins her back. They later meet again and reminisce over old times, now with different lovers and on much better terms.
Interestingly enough, Annie Hall was originally meant to be a murder mystery but the producers persuaded Allen to transform it into a romantic comedy during shooting.
